What are Cookies?
HTTP cookies, or more commonly referred to as Web cookies, tracking cookies or just cookies, are parcels of text sent by a server to a web browser and then sent back unchanged by the browser each time it accesses that server. HTTP cookies are used for authenticating, tracking, and maintaining specific information about users, such as site preferences or the contents of their electronic shopping carts. The term "cookie" is derived from "magic cookie," a well-known concept in UNIX computing which inspired both the idea and the name of HTTP cookies. Whoa! Let's look at cookies again using some everyday language. When you visit jobsatworthingtonschools.com, you receive a "cookie" with a random number. This cookie is stored on your computer and on your application login. Each time you view a new page, your computer passes us the cookie number. If that number matches the number saved with your account, we allow you to proceed. If we cannot verify the number, we place a warning on the screen and request you contact the Help Desk for more information. When you close your browser, our cookie should be automatically deleted. It is properly termed a "session cookie" and does not store any personally-identifiable information or any data regarding your login. The extent of our cookie data is this unique identifier that is assigned each time you visit our website. The following instructions describe how to set Javascript options for: Mozilla FireFox (1.0 final release and earlier)
